During that very broke post-college period, one of my big splurges was buying sugar scrubs from a local artisan. I may not have had a budget for eating out, buying good wine or attending anything other than free events, but damn if I wasn’t going to take a luxurious shower that left me smelling like a Girl Scout cookie!

Exfoliation is a necessary step to keep skin glowing, and making a homemade sugar scrub, it turns out, is easy- just mix the ingredients in a bowl, transfer to a jar, and … that’s it! Plus, homemade scrubs give you the power to customize the scents to your fancy and to make sure every ingredient is top quality. And, if you suddenly feel like sharing, invite friends over for Healthyish cake baking and sugar scrub making, and buy the good wine because you’re past that college stage.

These scrubs also make a great gift for someone in need of a little pampering, especially for busy moms who don’t have time to sit in a tub. I like to make this blend for my sister-in-law who somehow manages to chase three youngsters under the age of four. The woman never sleeps!

As an added bonus, there’s a sustainability factor to this homemade sugar scrub. Save coffee grounds from your breakfast brew, or your cake-time caffeine, and put them to work invigorating your skin. A coarser grind is ideal. Think French press grounds.

1 cup [brewed] coffee grounds
1/3 cup almond oil
2 Tablespoons raw cacao or unsweetened cocoa powder
10 drops peppermint essential oil

Combine all the ingredients in an air-tight, shower safe jar.

P.S: The natural oils in these homemade sugar scrub recipes can leave your shower/tub a little slick, so be sure to rinse away any leftover oils and handle jars carefully. As with any new skincare product and more sensitive skin, it’s always good to test a little bit first to make sure your skin will react positively.
